We Can. We Will. We Did.

Greetings,

We made it-- thanks to all of your support and encouragement... I really felt it on the course. It was an absolutely incredible, awesome-- and mind-boggling day. James and I have been talking a lot this week... my Wingman. (The title of this post is what was on the back of his shirt while we ran to Boston)

Honestly, it's been a week and I'm still processing...

I will tell you that I believe there are angels among us. Dennis Glasgow from Toronto is one of them. He was there by my side from the hills in Newton into Boston and though I only spent one hour with him, his constant repeat of the same phrase "I'm here." everytime my eyes darted to the side for reassurance was mystifying. He was clearly a stronger runner as we moved into the last stretch of the run and though I kept encouraging him to run on he would not leave me. "I'm here." was all I kept hearing. Dennis was the one who spotted Regi in the crowd on Boylston Street. "There she is!"

This is a hard post for me because in some sense the Marathon completes the journey. I'm trying to find the words to bring this to summation but I'm not getting anywhere. Thinking this experience is something that defies placing into a neat little package-- So, I've decided I won't try and sum it up.

I will leave you with sincere gratitude and love... and a few photos of the day.
"Today is the BEST day of my life." Thank you, Aidan. Thank you, Maria.

My Wingman

Greetings,

It's really here.

Funny, I envisioned this weekend many times over the past several months and now that it's here it feels surreal...

Ed, Katherine Rose, James and I trawled the Runner's Expo and picked up the bib numbers. It was a big moment. James said when we walked into the expo, "Welcome to the world of the skinny people!" :)

Together, we attended the TNT Pasta Dinner this afternoon and it was an inspirational time... Thanks to YOU and your generosity, the Team Goal of $700,000 was exceeded! We were within $2,000 yesterday and by this afternoon we were over by more than $5,000 :) Hooray!

A lot of things came together today... I'd been trying for weeks to figure out my "race strategy" --Everyone kept asking me what it was going to be and I just couldn't put my finger on it. (Honestly, I don't remember having one last time.) There is a piece of me that wanted to test my limit-- appealing in some way, but every time I tried to envision running the entire course solo, it just didn't feel right.

Broached the subject with James this afternoon-- Just came out and said, "Will you run with me?" He replied slowly, "Yes. As long as you don't talk about running while we're running." I replied, "Deal. As long as you don't wear your iPod while we're running together." Done. The sibling compromise.

Finished our day with an awesome mass at the St. Francis Chapel in the Prudential Center. If you are ever in Boston and need a reflective space this is a little oasis. The place was packed with runners and the priest's homily talked about the "Marathon Journey."
James and I will begin the journey to Boston together with Aidan and Maria's light to guide.

With love and appreciation to all who have come along,
m

P.S. As I type this blog, Steady Eddie is carefully lacing my race chip onto my sneaker following the very specific directions the BAA has put forth. As always, right there when I need you.

The color of the week is... Purple!

Greetings,

Thank you for the email messages of late! Yes, the official countdown has finally begun. In preparation, I watched a documentary on Marathoning this past week and learned that runners preparing for 26.2 love to talk about their journey to the race-- and will talk with anyone who will feign some form of interest. Have to say, when I heard this it made me laugh (a little self-consciously.) For the many of you who have patiently listened to my verbal and written diatribes on training and the journey... thank you for indulging me :) We're headed into the home stretch.

7 Days = 26.2 for Aidan and Maria.

If you would like to follow James and me on race day:

Under the Boston Marathon menu tab you will find "AT&T Athlete Alert" this will provide the instructions needed to receive text message/email updates at various points on the course.

James' Bib Number = 23490 Mary's Bib Number = 23395

What's on the iPod: Where the Streets Have No Name U2 This is one of the most played songs on my iPod. 10 years ago on a cold January Sunday I was on a treadmill at Assumption. While running, I was trying to decide whether to join the AC team preparing for the 2000 Boston Marathon. As I was twisting the thought around in my brain, this song came on the radio. It was right then that the decision was made.

a Conversation...

Greetings,

On this beautiful day, we had the pleasure of enjoying it with Katherine's cousin, Nellie.

We were working on some Easter crafts at the dining room table and the CD that Patty made was playing in the background. The song "This Little Light of Mine" came on and the following conversation ensued:

Katherine: "I miss Aidan."

Nellie: "I miss him too."

(pause)

Katherine: "...but, Aidan's Here. In my heart."

P.S. The pink hats the girls have on are "Miami Dolphins" hats from Uncle James. As I am typing this entry, he is en route from Miami to Boston. The family fan club awaits.

Heart and Soul

Greetings!

What a day... Photos are courtesy of "Steadie Eddie" who was at the actual training site for the first time, yet has been along on the journey every step of the way. Thank you, Ed.
Another day for memory books and too much to put into words.

Highlights:

  • Receiving the purple singlet with Aidan and Maria's name emblazoned on the back.

  • Justin's (Justin and I work together at Assumption. He is a cancer survivor and an impressively dedicated volunteer for LLS.) moving rally for the team. Go TEAM! was shouted to the rafters.

  • A fun and laughter-filled bus ride to Hopkington with Melissa, an Assumption alum (pictured in center of photo in the blue skirt in the blog from last week :)

  • Ed, Katherine Rose, Mom and Dad to cheer us on at Mile 15! Justin gave Katherine the "foam finger" to cheer us on... in her book, it was Christmas all over again.

  • A beautiful, sunny and camaraderie infused run from Hopkinton to Heart Break Hill.

  • Waiting for transport back to Wellesley after the 20 I began to feel very cold. Hadn't even said a word about it, when Dad pulled off his warm parka and insisted I wear it. Somehow, he just knows and is always there with the right word or thing to do to offer comfort and support. He is another conduit of light in this world. Thanks Dad for continuously representing Aidan and Maria's goodness.

  • Finished the day with a late family lunch in Sudbury. It was good to relax and have James at the table.

The peak of the training is behind us. We have made it this far because of YOU.

With thanks and sincere appreciation,

m

Quote of the week: From the CD cover A Journey to Boston for Aidan and Maria put together by Patty. "To Mary and James: Wishing you a set of very light feet on your 26.2 journey as you help a cause with many a heavy heart."

What's on the iPod: Two songs selected by Patty. For Aidan: "The Best Day" by Taylor Swift. For Maria: "Ave Maria" by Choir of Benedictine Nuns at the Abbey of Regina Laudis (who knew the Choir of Benedictine Nuns was available at the iTunes store?? Leave it to Patty...)

Hopkinton Bound...

Greetings,
Woke this morning to a text from Patty (my amazing sister "-in-law") letting me know there was a CD inside the front door to listen to on the ride to Wellesley.
Opened the door to find a bag with 2 Discs of songs for James and me... on the playlists were songs dedicated to Aidan and Maria, song picks from all our nieces and nephews and a piece from Aunt Dale and the Benedictine Nuns at the Abbey of Regina Laudis (where this journey began back in September with the planting of Aidan's Tree). There were also song selections from the playlists of famous Boston Marathon runners, Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher.
So, with moist eyes the day begins.

Did you know that Patty is the one who just had the twin girls Josie and Tessie?
Patty runs a Marathon every day... A beacon of Aidan and Maria's light? You bet.
Here's to you, Sistah!
With much love,
m

P.S. On the inside cover of the CD case was this:
From Ryan Hall on his marathon mindset:
I do think about some of the things my dad ingrained in me growing up on the starting line, like "If it is not fun, then it is not worth doing." I like this mantra because we all get nervous and intimidated at the start of a marathon but this helps me just relax and enjoy the journey. It is important to enjoy each step in the journey-- even the tired ones-- because as my dad says, "Happy feet make light feet."

Patty, you are a gift. Thank you.

Off to see James and get on the race route. Gotta run.

Aidan

Regi shared these beautiful photos of Aidan for the dedication board that will be part of the 20 miler this week. The wedding photos were taken just about a year ago on March 28th when cousin Julie, Aidan's Aunt was married.
The other photos are of Aidan at his pre-school graduation and Aidan and his wonderful Dad, Josh.
Katherine Rose and I played and sang along with "This Little Light of Mine" on the iPod before she turned in for the night. "Aidan's light is mine..."

The Countdown Begins... Marathon Monday 29 days.

Greetings!
What a difference 7 days makes... what's that saying? "If you don't like the weather in New England... Wait 15 minutes." Shorts, sun and a flat (relatively) 15... "money" I heard one of the team members say.
It was truly a spectacular day. Pictured are some of my wonderful TNT teammates. Above is a photo of us just finishing the 15... in the center is Sara Swillo who works at Assumption with me! Small world.
We're heading into the home stretch and nostalgia is setting in. The training peak is next week as we get ready to run Hopkington to the base of Heartbreak Hill. 20 miles. Really looking forward to having James home to join in on the run. Ed and Katherine Rose will also be volunteering at a water stop along the race route-- KR has asked to be assigned to one of the stops where they are providing candy and treats... no gatorade/water-only stop for her! The question is... Will there be any treats left for the runners??

Squish, Squish... "Up!"

Greetings,
How about the rain? Have you had enough? I know I have! Saturday's 18-miler was one of the wetter ones I've encountered. It started with a little drizzle as we headed from Wellesley to Framingham... I remember thinking, "This isn't too bad." Then we turned around and started back toward Newton. All of a sudden we felt the wind gusting and blowing the rain-- right into our faces. Between the cars splashing us, navigating the hills and the rain getting heavier by the minute there was nothing to do but laugh and call out encouragement to the others.
We made it and I have to say I'm really glad the 18 is behind us. The "squish, squish" of soaked sneakers striking the sidewalk is something I hope not to hear again for a while ;)
It was another experience that will define this journey and in the moments of "I'm so wet and cold" there was the balance of "We're all in this together."

Came home to enjoy a wonderful evening with Ed and Katherine Rose watching the inspiring and uplifting movie, "Up." If you haven't had the chance to see it, it's a terrific film. Classic Disney in the sense that it has deep meaning cloaked in animation and slap stick humor-- Katherine's belly laugh had me grinning ear to ear. It was so good to be dry, warm and home with the family relaxing on the couch. It was also good to be fully present in the moment. This movie commanded it.

The adventure continues...

What's on the iPod: These are Days 10,000 Maniacs. This song has been one of my favorites for a long time. The lyrics are incredible.

An update from Ed and Team Bresnahan

After several weeks of training and preparation, Team Bresnahan ( Mary, Ed and Katherine) are looking forward to closing out strong and getting ready for race day. Our journey began last fall on our way to Aidan's tree dedication at the Abbey Regina Laudis in CT . Mary began
filling out her application in the car and I recall Uncle Rick being shocked and chagrined at the many questions that Mary had to answer during her application process- little did we know what we were all in store for in the next several months. This was not going to be your typical marathon training experience but something a whole lot more! From the overwhelming generosity from family and friends, the early Saturday morning training sessions in Wellesley, the inspirational stories from the survivors and the opportunity to be a part of a great cause, it has been a very special experience for our family. We will remember this for many years to come. And maybe even run a marathon as a family some day! Thanks to all for your generosity and support ! Go Mary- 26.20!

Light and Life

Greetings!

Today is Katherine Rose's 6th Birthday. Breakfast this morning was her favorite... blueberry pancakes and sausage topped off with a fancy birthday hat. What could be better?
Tonight Katherine was settling into bed for the night and we were talking about her day. She paused for a moment and then said out of the blue, "I bet Aidan is celebrating my birthday in heaven having cake with all his friends." ....out of the mouths of babes.
Happy Birthday, Katherine Rose. Thank you for all the light you bring to our life and for helping us to believe in all that is good.
18 miles this weekend. Wish me luck.

"Cow Bell"

Greetings,

H-e-l-l-o Atlanta! This week Assumption provided me the wonderful opportunity to gather with colleagues from around the country who are involved in Enrollment Management and Marketing. It was a very productive and inspiring trip from the work perspective and beyond.

Getting to know the participants I met a VP from a Tennessee institution who told me that he'd just started running 5 years ago and has already run 3 marathons. Impressive. I also learned that running the Marine Corps Marathon he'd dedicated each mile to a person who had had a significant influence in his life. Big smile.

He went on to tell me that Mile 14 was dedicated to an executive administrator who was a mentor to him and had since passed. One of his distinct memories of this individual was that he would loudly ring a Cow Bell each time a goal or major accomplishment had been achieved. Running along Mile 14 of the Marine Corps Marathon what did he hear from the crowd?? You guessed it, a loudly ringing Cow Bell. This was the only time he heard this sound the entire race route. A-mazing.
I loved this story and the thoughtful way he infused others into his marathon experience.

The next several weeks are dotted by some very long runs and I have to say it's a bit daunting. As you have been all along... YOU will continue along on the journey. Remembering individuals who have influenced me in a positive way seems a fitting way to gather energy and tackle these runs.
So, I decided on Thursday night that from here on out each mile in the coming weeks will be dedicated to a person who embodies Aidan and Maria's goodness.

Saturday was a 16 mile run and traveling back to Boston Friday night, I made a list of 16 people. The Run? It was a sweet 16.

Blessed with a well of people who demonstrate all that is good in this world,

m

P.S. Found myself in the cab queue with a gentleman who was also heading to the airport. With cabs at a premium we decided to share. We discussed where we were flying that afternoon. Me? Boston. Him? Johannesburg. Wow. Further conversation about family, jobs etc. revealed that he works in finance for Coca Cola Corporate (International Headquarters = Atlanta) and has completed two Ultra Marathons. Wow.
I guess it really is all relative. :)

P.P.S. He insisted on taking care of the entire cab fare. When I thanked him for his "donation" in support of Catholic Higher Education he simply replied, "Go and drink Coke products." Deal.

"Today is the BEST day!"

Pictured left: James and I finish 15!

Next stop... a visit with the twins! James holding Josie Elizabeth(l) and Tessie Mary(r) Auntie Mary then has a turn... How about that smile, James? Life is so good.

Greetings,

The journey only gets better...

James was in town from Miami and came to his first Team in Training practice. I was honored to have been asked to provide the Dedication for this week's run. Together, James and I stood before the team and shared with them Maria and Aidan's story. Aidan's famous phrase "Today is the BEST day (of my life)!" was included in the dedication. There were tears and smiles and then we were off and running.

Lopping down Route 16 we passed group after group of TNT runners returning on the course-- All of a sudden, I heard a runner shouting, "Hey! Today is the BEST day!" This wasn't the only time we heard this during our 15 mile run. The team was enlivened by Aidan's words, his ability to embrace each moment, to live and to love fully in the present. It was an experience I will never, ever forget.

James and I then went on to visit the newest members of the family... What a gift.

Aidan. Maria. Thank you for your example of how to live a good life, to embrace each moment and for providing inspiration to so many. You are ever-present.

"Today is the BEST day of my life!"

With gratitude,

m
P.S. We are all connected. After giving the dedication, a fellow runner walked up to me and shaking her head in disbelief, said, "My daughter goes to school with Ava, Aidan's younger sister." Incredible.

Feelin' the Love...

Greetings,
Happy Valentine's Day! Hope you are having a wonderful day with family and friends. Yesterday, running 15 with the team I was definitely feelin' the love. Running along the marathon route with some amazing LLS teammates and many others out pounding the pavement for other causes is truly heartwarming. The tempo is picking up and we have a lot more company on the trail.
Lots of excitement in the week ahead:

  • We'll welcome two new members of the family on Friday as my brother Dan and wife Patty expect twin girls on the 19th. Can't wait!!
  • James will be home to meet the babies and run with the team on Saturday. This will be his first run with the group and we're really excited to have him on the trail.
  • Singlet personalizations are due and I'll be submitting Aidan and Maria's name to be screened on the back for Marathon Monday. A big moment.

With love and appreciation to all,

m

Have you ever washed an iPod in the washing machine?

Greetings!
Thank you Regi for sharing your reflection with us. You, Aidan, Ava and Josh are ever-present in our thoughts and prayers.

Out on the training trail it's been a rather interesting and full week... let me bullet the major happenings :)
  • New sneakers! Had worn the tread off the pair purchased in November... love the new size 1o.5 saucony stabils. Not glamorous but they feel good on the feet.
  • How about the COLD?? Anyone out there had enough? The photos above show the temp outside when I had to run 14 miles on Friday a.m. The wind gusts at 25 mph sent me into the basement to the treadmill (yes, I had to take a photo to prove that I did indeed run 14 on the 9 year-old machine.) Did you know that a treadmill shuts off automatically at 100 minutes? Who knew? I do now :) Slogged through it singing some of the tunes you've suggested for my iPod. Thanks!

  • Ever washed an iPod in the washing machine? Well... I did and it wasn't a happy moment when I figured it out. But, once again, our "Steady Eddie" came to the rescue. He simply asked for the iPod and ear buds and placed them on the heater overnight. "Patience," he said. Sure enough 24 hours later, the tunes are cranking, the iPod is clean and I'm back in the saddle. Thanks, Ed.
That's enough for now. Stay warm and keep the song suggestions and quotes coming. I really appreciate them!
m

P.S. Lest I forget my training partner... While I was in the cellar on the old trusty (or is it rusty?) treadmill... James was running the Miami 1/2 Marathon with 18,000 other runners and a huge cheering section. Enough said. ;)

Guest Blogger - Regi Garvey

Hi, there! Mary asked me to be a "guest blogger" a few weeks ago. I'm sorry it's taken me this long! I wasn't sure what I would write about. (Those who know me, know that I am very rarely at a loss for words!)

First of all, I want to thank Mary for running this race in memory of my son, Aidan. Every day without him is a bigger struggle than the day before. I miss him more than I could ever put into words. Our 2 1/2 year old daughter, Ava, and the continued outpouring of love from our family and friends, are what keeps us going. (This picture was taken exactly one year ago today in Crystal Cove, Newport Beach, CA.

I was a member of the San Diego Chapter of Team-in-Training back in 1998. I ran in the "Midnight Sun Marathon" in Anchorage, Alaska. (I know that training in that beautiful California sunshine was a lot easier than running in the cold, dark New England winter!) I ran in memory of my cousin, Adam Ridge, who died from the combination of two types of cancer, ALL and AML, just before his 7th birthday. I also ran in honor of a little girl from San Diego named, Courtney. She was 5 1/2 and had ALL. (I never imagined that 11 years later, I would have a 5 1/2 year old son, also diagnosed with ALL.)

For those of you who aren't familiar with the details of Aidan's passing, he was only 3 weeks into his diagnosis, and already in remission, when he died from the swine flu. Thanks to the Leukemia Society, and other organizations like them who raise the money for Leukemia and other blood cancers, they have made amazing advances in treatment and have saved millions of lives. Aidan had a 90% cure rate, and today Courtney is a thriving college student.

So, if you've already supported Mary with a monetary contribution, you should feel good about how those funds will be used. If you haven't contributed, yet, then please do. Even $5 will help. It all adds up quickly!

Love, Regi

A shout out to "The Home Team"

Good Morning!

From day one, this marathon journey has been a group effort. You have all been so supportive in a variety of ways. Thank YOU.

Today I want to give a special shout out to "The Home Team," Ed and Katherine Rose :) Yesterday morning was a great example of the many small and big ways they are bringing me along...

It was another cold, inky black Saturday morning when I got up to head to Wellesley for the 13 mile training run. I was trying to be quiet and not disturb the sleeping house when I heard Ed say from the dark room, "Would you like me to start your car for you?" Music to my ears. And leaving a warm bed to go out into the fridid blackness to make it happen... priceless. You're the best, Ed!

With this start to the day the training run was a blast and another phenomenal experience with my fellow Team in Training runners :)

We finished off the day with a trip to Rocket Park to go sledding. Katherine Rose helps me to keep it all in perspective and racing down the hill, piled on the Bresnahan's 35-year old toboggan was exhilarating and uplifting.

Another day for the memory books!

Typo!

Greetings!
This past weekend, James was in town to celebrate mom's 70th birthday. It was so great to see him and we made plans for him to fly back in February and March for training runs. Lots to look forward to as the training heats up.
Funny thing happened yesterday... I went to the training schedule and read that we were supposed to complete "10, 1/2 mile repeats at your 5K pace". So, doing as I was instructed, I hopped on the treadmill, turned up the speed and started running along. By the 5th repeat I was huffing, puffing and basically weak in the knees. Not a good sign. I took an extra long slow jog and though not pretty... managed to finish the last 5 repeats. I'm thinking... OK. I have a lot of work to do in order to be ready for April 19th!!
Just learned that there was a typo in the memo and the pace was supposed to be your marathon pace not a 5K pace! Well. That makes me feel a whole lot better :) Still a lot of work to do but perhaps not the mountain I thought I was facing. I'll take it.

First Run with the Team!

Greetings!

What a weekend... Saturday marked my first official run with my fellow Team in Training teammates. Left Worcester just after 7 a.m. and enjoyed a sparkling winter day running 11 through the streets of Wellesley and Natick. Met some fantastic people and ran the back half with a colleague from Assumption, Sarah Swillo. She's a talented runner, uplifting person-- and I learned that she's also a running coach. Who knew?

Headed back home just after 11 a.m. feeling inspired by all the wonderful people I had met and the dedication and goodness in their hearts.

Lucky.

Time to get serious...

Greetings,
Happy New Year!
Turning the calendar to 2010 gave me a reality check... April 19th will be here before we know it and the training is now going to take on a new tempo. Excited and nervous.
On New Year's morning, I woke up very early and in the process of organizing some Christmas items I came across a photo album. I plopped down on the couch and flipped back the cover to discover it was an album from 2000-- tha last time I ran the marathon. Funny how those things happen, huh?
It had some awesome pictures of family, friends-- as well as the old training log and mileage chart. Did I say "reality check?" :)
Bring it on.
